About Historic Placerville, CA

Historic Placerville is the central area of the city of Placerville that includes the Main Street with beautiful landmark structures that preserve the rich history and culture of the region. The city was born from the Gold Rush era during the late 1840’s when gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma. The discovery led to the migration of thousands of prospectors who wanted to try their fortune. The town developed as an essential supply center for many mining camps that started to appear throughout El Dorado County.

Today, Historic Placerville is a charming historic community that offers an excellent blend of old small town buildings and modern amenities. The streets are lined with restaurants, stores, specialty shops, museums, and other local businesses. Several events and festivals attract tourists from all over to take part in the rich history and culture of the area. Homes that are within the historic district are mostly single-family homes in suburban communities. These residences no longer have the same historic feel such as the buildings along Main Street, but are much more appropriate for families looking for a comfortable place to live.
